Ms. J. N., one of the visitors in her 30’s, works at a travel agency in London, and Ms. M. D., the other in her 40’s, works at a department store there. They came to Japan to enjoy their late summer holidays and I had an opportunity to guide them around Kamakura. We visited Hasedera Temple and Kotokuin Temple (Great Buddha) in the morning in order to have them watch the Yabusame festival which starts at 1 p.m. at Tsurugaoka Hachimanngu
Shrine. As we put off having lunch and ran for a good place to watch Yabusame, we could get a very good place. Ms. J. was absorbed in taking pictures for her report on a new sightseeing route to her boss.
Also, she wanted to know in detail about the differences among the horses: one depicted in ema, a votive picture tablet of a horse, one used in horseback archery they watched, and one commonly-seen in the Kamakura era.
They said that they would go to costume shops in Akihabara and then to Kyoto and Nara via a tour of Fuji and Hakone during their two-week stay in Japan.
