From late October 2008 to late March 2010, three KSGG members, including myself, helped Mr. C from Bangkok with his Japanese study. He was a student learning international relations at Graduate School of Yokohama National University, and had a clear goal to read Chinese characters and pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 2.
We taught him to read Japanese using books for elementary school children, picture books, and easy newspaper articles. He was very pleased that he could even read and understand long Japanese sentences. He experienced not only taking Japanese lessons but also doing activities such as mountain climbing, hiking, viewing cherry blossoms and fireworks, visiting museums and breweries, and even watching professional baseball games. As he succeeded in Japanese Proficiency Test Level 2, we were very happy and congratulated him. Before his return to his country, we went to Enoshima instead of having his farewell party. When we were eating ice cream cones there, however, a kite dived down to his cone and took it away. Luckily, he didn’t get hurt. We were very surprised at this happening and yet we laughed a lot at the same time. Now he is back in his country, looking for a job in a Japanese company in Thailand. We hope to support him so that he can do his best and make the most of what he learned in Japan. We really wish for our reunion.
