Even though it was in the middle of the rainy season, we had a very fine morning. The sharp mossy stairs of Sugimotodera Temple were shining with morning dew, while the bamboo grove of Hokokuji Temple was beautiful with sunlight filtering through the trees. The husband and his wife looked deeply fascinated. They must have had a strong impression of the two Zen temples on the strength of the beautiful sunlight. In the mail I received from the husband later, he said “Sugimotodera Temple was the most impressive” among all the spots they visited during their 2-week tour in Japan, including Nikko, Nara, and Kyoto. In the teahouse of Jyomyoji Temple, we were absorbed in speaking and laughing in broken Japanese, German, and French in confusion, which the three of us had begun to study. Then I thought this could be a style of international exchange.
