[Date & Time] Saturday, May 16, at 11:00 ~ 16:40
[Spots] Tsurugaoka-Hachimangu Shrine, Hasedera Temple, and Kotokuin Temple (Great Buddha)
[Visitors] 23 JICA trainees from 18 countries, with 2 each from Argentina, China,
Mongolia, Brazil, and Myanmar, and 1 each from Columbia, Uruguay,
Ecuador, Paraguay, Thailand, Vietnam, Kenya, Cameroon, Jordan, Bangladesh, India, Madagascar, and Iran
[Attendants] 19 KSGG Members and 4 Observers
We had many trainees from South America this time. They were all bright and cheerful. Coincidentally, as JICA trainees and KSGG attendants were equal in number, the tour was conducted on a one-on-one basis. We have seldom experienced it , but it was a meaningful tour for both trainees and attendants.
I asked the trainee from Cameroon, who came to Japan for the first time, to tell us about his country--history, culture, industry, and so forth.
The formal name of the country is the Republic of Cameroon, which is located in Central Africa. Cameroon had been a German colony before it was divided between France and Britain.
As for Cameroon’s culture, it is well known that soccer was introduced and became popular among the people when it was a German colony. They won the African Nations Cup four times--in 1984, 1988, 2000, and 2002.
Cameroon has a population of 19,520,000 and its capital is Yaoundé. They export coffee and bananas, which are their main agricultural products, and their official languages are English and French.
I realized that, unlike the Dark Ages, Africa is developing rapidly today. I am happy to report that, thanks to my colleagues, we could finish our service successfully without any trouble.
