The mother dyed a bandana, their daughters, who are a
first grader and a fourth grader, of elementary school dyed handkerchiefs and the
father took photos of them. After an instructor explained how indigo dye is
made and what tools should be used to make certain patterns, they chose their
favorite patterns and started dyeing their stuff . The father took photos of their works after
they soaked them in indigo twice. At Nihon Minkaen, we had soba noodles for
lunch and in the museum house, I explained the feature of the house structures,
the styles of roofs, the life of farmers and how to make foundations firm,
which are similar to Thai houses. Then we went to see houses explaining about
the inn for horse dealers, the oil shop, the entrance of Samurai’s house, the
water mill and the Gassho Zukuri style house and also enjoyed making fires and
putting out charcoal fires around the sunken fireplace together.
