Zazen (Sitting Meditation) Experience for Foreigner

[Date & Time] Monday, November 28, at 12:15~16:30
[Visitors] 3 Americans [Place] Kenchoji Temple
[Attendant] 1 KSGG member

This is our first project for foreigners to join the public zazen program. The zazen meeting started with the priest’s explanations about Kenchoji Temple itself and zazen in fluent English. Then he taught us how to cross our legs and the posture. At the end of the program, all of us chanted the Heart Sutra together written in the Roman alphabet after about a 15-minue zazen session was held three times.
After practicing zazen we moved to the reception room in an outbuilding and had powdered green tea and sweets. In talking with the priest, some of them asked various questions which made him upset. One of the visitors, Ms. L said that she would like to recommend the submarine crew to practice zazen which requires patience.
