Our bus left a hotel at Shinjuku on time. The JICA participants eagerly took notes of our members’ explanations in the bus. We first went to Kamakura Market and Hongakuji Temple as a surprise for them. As we had expected, the participants were very pleased. Then we headed for Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, where all of them were impressed to see a non-Japanese bride dressed in white. I was moved by their eagerness to learn anything wherever they went. I felt a lump in my throat to realize that this kind of enthusiasm would develop their home country, Cambodia. They asked a lot of questions covering various topics at Hasedera Temple and Kotokuin Temple and even advertising displays on the street were their sphere of interest. This was, what we call, a moving Japanese class in which students asked everything eye-catching. Cambodian interpreters were also really enthusiastic. We could see how much they felt grateful to us in their words of farewell. They said that they would go to Higashiyama Hot Spring resort the next week. I hoped that the participants would get warmed in the hot spring bath though they said they felt embarrassed to take off their clothes.
