In Hasedera Temple, we met with a troupe holding a memorial service for the dead in the autumnal equinoctial week. We were caught between the priest and his believers,
and listened to them recite the sutra for a while.
What they cried up in admiration were the bamboo grove in Hokokuji Temple and the
mossy stone stairs in Sugimotodera Temple. “Wonderful!” they shouted at these temples, stood there for a while fascinated by the scenery, and took many pictures of them. On the way back, while we were walking along a brook, a male visitor said, “Kamakura looks like Europe.”
It was a splendid day for me to touch a different culture through a nice and pleasant conversation with them. .
